Overview
This focused, hands-on workshop provides healthcare professionals with a practical introduction to airway assessment and essential airway management skills used in Advanced Life Support (ALS). Designed as an abridged taster of the full ALS2 course, it emphasises early recognition of airway compromise, safe use of basic airway adjuncts, and effective oxygenation and ventilation strategies in critically ill or deteriorating patients.
Through short presentations, skills stations, and scenario-based practice, participants will strengthen their confidence in managing the airway during the first crucial minutes of emergency care.
Key areas covered include:
Recognition of airway obstruction and hypoxia
Structured A–E assessment with focus on airway (A) and breathing (B)
Airway positioning and manual maneuvers
Use of OPA/NPA and supraglottic airway devices
Safe and effective bag–mask ventilation
Oxygen delivery methods and ETCO₂ monitoring
Choking algorithm and immediate interventions
Frameworks to Be Covered
This session draws on core ALS airway management principles, international resuscitation guidelines, structured A–E assessment models, and evidence-based approaches to improving oxygenation and ventilation in emergency care.
Who Should Attend?
Doctors and medical officers
Nurses in critical care, emergency, and acute wards
Paramedics and first responders
Clinical educators and ALS instructors
Any healthcare professional involved in emergency or deteriorating-patient care
What You Will Experience?
Participants will engage in:
- Hands-on practice with basic airway adjuncts (OPA, NPA, supraglottic devices)
• Demonstrations of effective oxygen delivery and ETCO₂ monitoring
• Bag–mask ventilation and airway-opening techniques
• Application of the choking algorithm
• Short, realistic scenarios focusing on A/B assessment and rapid airway support
• Group discussion and guided reflection on improving safety and technique
Why Attend This Session?
This workshop builds practical confidence in recognising and managing airway compromise while using safe, structured techniques applicable across all clinical settings. Participants will practise key airway skills, apply algorithms in small-group scenarios, and refresh essential lifesaving interventions that directly impact patient outcomes.
It is an ideal opportunity to reinforce foundational ALS concepts before undertaking more advanced training.
What You Will Gain?
By the end of this workshop, participants will have:
Improved recognition of airway compromise
Greater confidence using basic airway adjuncts and ventilation methods
A structured, systematic approach to airway and breathing assessment
Enhanced understanding of oxygenation strategies and choking management
Practical hands-on experience consistent with ALS principles
Competency in providing ALS Level airway management techniques
